unclaimed-recollection / 99 - Meet the Characters and World.md# Meet the Characters and World A companion guide to *Unclaimed Recollection*. It covers the people, the places and the world around them, and is written to be read at any point without spoiling the stories. --- # Part 1: The People ## The four voices ### Sevran Hallow - **Age:** early thirties - **Role:** found in the Deep Archive at Halloway Station - **Looks:** 181 cm and lean, with long limbs and smooth, unworked hands. Warm medium-brown skin, a long even face, level dark brows and dark grey-hazel eyes. His near-black hair is cropped short. He walks slowly and looks at doors, floors and hands before faces. - **Manner:** He speaks in complete, careful sentences, waits a beat before answering and thanks people a little more often than the occasion calls for. He is courteous and curious, with a quiet warmth that arrives quickly once it arrives. He asks questions in the order they occur to him. - **Habits:** He learns every station's chime and recites them under his breath. He likes mara root and tea. ### Odran Maresh - **Age:** 38 - **Role:** Field Guild guide - **Home:** Pinecliff, a small settlement on the Saddle - **Looks:** 176 cm, broad-shouldered and sturdy, with rope-scarred forearms from twenty years of hauling. Light-medium olive skin, wind-reddened across the cheekbones. A weathered face with a slightly bent nose and a small notch in the left eyebrow. Dark brown hair cropped short and greying at the temples, a close salt-and-pepper beard and dark amber-brown eyes. - **Background:** He was born at a water-and-freight halt on the Saddle, to an Avarin father and an Oyari mother. He left at seventeen to work the lines, first freight and then conductor's runner, and became a rated Field Guild guide at twenty-six. He has ridden nearly every route on the Aurevian rail map. - **Manner:** He is dry, courteous and a little formal with strangers, and easier once he has decided to trust someone. He walks slightly ahead of whoever he is with and checks behind him without turning his head. He counts heads, says "mm" where other people say "no", and straightens his satchel strap when uncomfortable. - **Likes:** Rail timetables, weather, a good Kandren kitchen and a decent cup of tea. ### Anka Dorrin - **Age:** 74 (she looks late fifties) - **Role:** Field Guild medical officer - **Looks:** 168 cm, compact and sturdy, with a straight, upright carriage. Fair olive skin, ruddy from the wind. Pale grey-blue eyes that look shrewd and tired. Thick iron-grey hair, braided and pinned up. She wears a long, worn moss-green Guild coat with one cuff mended in dark red thread, and a heavy cord of beads wound three times around her left wrist. - **Background:** Kandren, born in the Foundries. She trained at the Medical Collegium and then left a safe city post for frontier medicine, because the work that needed doing was out on the lines. She has spent four decades as an expedition and evacuation officer, mostly on the Northern Corridor and the Pale March. - **Manner:** Flat, dry and exact, like a ledger line. She says what she needs and nothing else. *"Eat first. Then you can lie to me properly."* - **Likes:** Dark bread, root stew, a long table where nobody is left out, and a case that no chart explains. ### Resa Maresh - **Age:** 41 - **Role:** Runs the Pinecliff kitchen - **Looks:** 165 cm, sturdy and soft-edged, with strong forearms and a grounded, unhurried stance. Light-medium olive skin, a round-oval face with laugh lines, dark amber-brown eyes that are bright and watchful. Thick dark brown hair in loose curls escaping from a bun. She wears a rolled-sleeve blouse and a flour-dusted canvas apron. - **Background:** Odran's older sister. She grew up at the halt when it was one siding, a cistern and a dozen houses. At nineteen she apprenticed in a Kandren kitchen at Tern Junction, where she learned long tables, stock and the rule that a meal is incomplete if someone nearby is left out. She came home and opened her own kitchen. - **Manner:** Warm, blunt and a little sardonic. She says what she thinks and feeds you while she does. *"He thanked the cistern. Somebody has to say it's a good cistern."* - **Likes:** Dark breads, root stews, reading a table by who sits where, and needling her brother. --- ## Other voices These characters narrate or appear in later stories. ### Idrin Orek - **Age:** 42 - **Role:** Field Guild instructor at Tern Junction - **Looks:** Lean, with grey-threaded dark hair and a frost-scarred left cheek. He wears a charcoal-brown waxed coat with brass clasps and carries a folding brass rule and a chalk pouch. - **Manner:** Spare with words and exact with numbers. He counts heads for a living. He lives above Zdena's kitchen. ### Zahir Dasan - **Age:** about 24 - **Role:** Yard hand at Tern Junction; keeps the night charging shed - **Looks:** 177 cm and long-limbed, with curly dark hair, a chipped front tooth and a rope-scarred palm. He wears a rust quilted vest over a blue tunic with patterned cuffs, and a blue bead on his cord. - **Background:** Tavari, from Hollin Salt, in the far south. He writes to his parents every season, with a joke in every letter. - **Manner:** Curious, warm and talkative. He asks a great many questions, and he makes tea when something is too large to say. ### Teodan Sethra - **Role:** Rigger at the Foundries, from Low Kettle - **Looks:** 183 cm, tall, with soot worked into his palms. - **Manner:** He plays the rebenga and will not sign a lift he has not walked himself. ### Ayuk Veln - **Age:** 48 - **Role:** Licensed sounder based at Halloway - **Looks:** 170 cm. A long, grey-streaked braid and a charcoal wool coat with red and gold beaded bands and a fur-trimmed hood. - **Background:** Sivaq, from Coldharbor. A sounder reads the ground for a crew and says whether it will hold. - **Manner:** Slow and dry. He keeps an oilcloth notebook and writes down what his instruments show, never what he thinks it means. ### Joren Vass - **Role:** Telemetry analyst at Solvara - **Looks:** About 182 cm, with a pale bead on his cord, a field leaf and a reckoner. - **Manner:** Courteous and brief. He appears in the southern survey. --- ## Also met along the way Some of these characters have no reference images yet. - **Zdena Hrul** keeps the Guild room and the kitchen at Tern. She is dry, wide and immovable on custom. Her best-known rule is that business waits until after the meal. - **Perrin Vasko** is a lean, fair, copper-haired field-school lead who wears a school cap. - **Lian Sarro** is a slight scholar, ink to the elbow, who draws the survey maps. - **Marit Sove** is a square, quiet hand in a canvas apron, with a brass key tool. - **Bohdan Krel** is the Tern yard foreman, who will not sign for anything that is not on his sheet. - **Old Teva** is Pinecliff's oldest regular, who delivers the day's weather, gossip and news in that order. - **Hanne** chairs the Pinecliff council, **Brum** keeps the cistern and **Edda** keeps the supply book. --- # Part 2: The Places ## Pinecliff A small settlement in the Reach, a ward of Tern Junction. It grew from a water-and-freight halt on the Saddle, with a cistern, a siding and a kitchen that opens before the first local. It is the home of Odran and Resa. The platform has its own chime, as every station does. ## Tern Junction *"They send us trains. We decide who's on them."* A high, windy pass between the Rimwall and the Sunward Range, at the end of the Saddle Line. It is four to five hours from Aurevia by express. Most through passengers change here for the long lines into the Far Reach: the Northern, Eastern and Southern corridors. The station holds the only reliable power for kilometres around, and the town lives on transshipment, inns, repairs and cell charging. Whoever brokers the Far Reach rail slots here is richer and more precarious than any city merchant. The Guild room, Zdena's kitchen and the training yard are all here. ## Halloway Station A research settlement on the southern edge of the Northern Ruins, six to eight hours from Aurevia with a change at Tern. It is built over the Deep Archive, a buried vault of storage media, much of it unreadable. It is a distant campus: researchers, archaeologists and outfitters, funded by grants and licensing. The station bar has the best-informed gossip on the continent and the worst beer. ## Kesh Ford and Wellhead Two stops on the Saddle Line between Aurevia and Tern. **Kesh Ford**, about an hour and a half out, is an assembly and light-fabrication town, called "the Foundries with better air". **Wellhead** sits near the source of the Glasswater, home to Solvara water staff, foresters and cave guides. ## Hollin Salt The southern terminus of the long line out of Varrow Junction, about three days from Aurevia. A Tavari town of salt works, oases and caravan halts on the edge of the salt desert. Every household sets a place for a stranger on Guest Night. ## Low Kettle An independent mining and salvage town in the Southern Territories, about two days down the Southern Corridor. It runs its own government and its own power-cell standard, which does not fit Aurevian gear. *"Useful, and no relation."* ## Coldharbor The northern terminus, in the Pale March, two to three days from Aurevia. A cold-chain trading town of Sivaq and Kandren families at the end of the Northern Corridor. --- ## The districts of Aurevia Aurevia has nine districts, which grew around infrastructure, geography and old reconstruction projects rather than a plan. The stories visit these. ### Crownward The eastern edge of the city, rising toward the Sunward Range. It is the gateway to the mountains and the home of exploration, with the Mountain Line terminus, expedition warehouses and outfitters. It is practical, adventurous and slightly rough. Two institutions matter here. The **Charter Hall** is the Field Guild's hiring hall, where expedition charters are posted and crews sign on. The **Late Board** in Crownward Terminus holds one card for every crew that has filed a return date. ### Lumen The cultural and educational quarter: universities, theatres, galleries, music halls and archives. It is youthful, intellectual, eccentric and perpetually changing. Its landmark is the **Readers' Room**. ### The Foundries Aurevia's manufacturing heart: fabrication, machine repair, rail yards and recycling. Loud, dense, sometimes smoky and intensely productive. Many industrial families have lived here for generations. It is also the city's Kandren district, with large portions and worker eateries. Its landmarks are Anvil Row and the Long Shed. ### Glasswater A river district of towers, markets, gardens and promenades along the Glasswater River, and one of the city's most culturally mixed areas. It is lively, warm and crowded, and known for Maravi food and waterfront seafood. Its landmarks are the Promenade and the Silver Market. ### The Aureate The civic heart: the Assembly, the Directorate, museums, memorials and monumental plazas. It is immaculate, grand and busy by day, and strangely quiet at night. ### The Exchange and the Old Port The commercial centre, with banks, hotels, trading halls and logistics firms. Beside it, the **Old Port** is the working harbour on the Veyran shore. Ancient and modern construction sit almost on top of each other. It is not an official district, but it works as an unofficial extension of the Exchange. --- # Part 3: The World ## Avare and the Collapse The planet is **Virelia**, and the known world is a single continent called **Avare**. A human civilization once spanned the whole planet and reached heights nobody can reproduce. It ended in a catastrophe so distant that its cause has been lost, fragmented or forgotten. What survives is ruins, corrupted archives, oral traditions, contradictory accounts and machines that still work although nobody fully understands them. People do not think of themselves as living after the end of the world. Rebuilding is simply the normal condition of their lives, and the world is recovering. Forests have reclaimed old cities, and the old industrial lands are strange mixtures of ruin, wilderness and new settlement. ## Aurevia, the last great city Aurevia stands on the eastern shore of the Veyran, a freshwater inland sea. It is beautiful, prosperous and genuinely worth living in, with solar fields, restored forests, vertical farms, public gardens and ancient towers built into modern architecture. People come for security and reliable infrastructure, for education and archives, and for the chance of making something of themselves. **The civic floor.** Aurevia's social contract is that nobody should fall below a basic standard of civilized living. Housing, food, water, power, healthcare, education and transit within the city are guaranteed. Nobody is guaranteed the lifestyle they would like. The floor is delivered in the city and thins with distance from it. **Solvara.** A large corporation that maintains the systems the city depends on, such as energy, water, communications, major transport and the preservation of ancient technology. It is not the government. Aurevia governs its people, and Solvara keeps the lights on. People rely on it, distrust it, work for it and criticise it, often all at once. *"I don't have to like them. I have to admit they keep the lights on."* ## The Reach Beyond the city, a network of settlements stretches out along the rail lines: farm towns, mining camps, research stations, junctions and halts. The farther from Aurevia, the thinner the infrastructure. The **Region** (about 200-300 km) has dependable rail and strong ties to the city. The **Reach** (about 500-800 km) has limited rail, intermittent communications and more independence. The **Far Reach** lies beyond that, with sparse service and distances measured in days. Many of these communities depend on Aurevia and resent it in about equal measure. *"They're outside the city, but they're still Aurevian."* ## Rail and platform songs Rail is the circulatory system of the continent. Cars exist, but they are an eccentric statement: *rail is transportation, a car is an adventure*. When a settlement loses its rail service, it can become an emergency. Rail time and fares grow with distance. Public transit is free inside the city, and beyond it every journey costs a fare. The main routes in these stories are: - The **Saddle Line** runs from Aurevia to Tern Junction by way of Kesh Ford and Wellhead. - The **Northern Corridor** runs from Tern Junction to Halloway Station and on to Coldharbor. - The **Southern Corridor** runs from Varrow Junction to Low Kettle and Hollin Salt. Every station has its own **chime sequence**, a platform song, and rail people know a stop by ear. ## Cords, beads and leaves Nobody carries a personal screen. Instead, everyone wears a **keycord**, a braided cord strung with **beads** that carries identity, money, transit pass and access, with no display of its own. To see anything, a person touches the cord to a public **leaf**, a paper-thin display built into tables, walls and seat-backs, which shows their things until they let go. A person's beads say who they are and where they stand: a Guild bead, a settlement bead, a residency note. The computing happens in hidden infrastructure that Solvara maintains. ## The Field Guild The Field Guild is the organisation that employs the explorers, guides and medical officers who work the ruins and the long lines. Its **Charter Hall** is where expeditions are posted and crews sign on. Guides like Odran handle ground, permits, settlement manners and the paperwork of getting a crew there and back. Medical officers like Anka keep them alive a long way from a hospital. Crews file a return date, and the **Late Board** at Crownward Terminus keeps a card for each one. ## Ancient things The old world left behind more than ruins. Ancient lamps called **old lights** never run down and are found in nearly every home. Many ancient objects still work, and people have a folk vocabulary for them based on what they do and not why. Something is **told** if it behaves as if instructed long ago and still obeying. It is **keyed** if it answers only to one person, word or action, and **held** if it will not wear, age or break. It is **sour** if it works, but wrongly. Aurevian copies of ancient objects last only for years, where the originals last for centuries. Nobody can fully explain any of it. Researchers work to understand these things, Solvara maintains them and the Discovery Registry records them. Finds are claimed by finders, settlements, universities and corporations alike. ## People and traditions Virelia has eleven major cultural traditions, which are familiar without being copies of Earth cultures. Aurevia itself is a **culture of cultures**, and an Aurevian may have an Avarin mother, a Maravi father and a Sivaq surname. Identity shows in names, speech, dress, food, manners and festivals more than in ancestry. The traditions that appear most in these stories are: | Tradition | Character | |---|---| | **Kandren** | Resilient, direct and communal. Known for the **shared table**: a meal is incomplete if someone nearby is excluded. Dark breads, root stews, heavy coats and embroidered patterns. | | **Avarin** | Reserved, institution-minded and exact. Wool and linen, stone and timber. Odran's father's side. | | **Oyari** | Market towns, weaving and craft guilds, drumming and spoken word, with trust built on reputation. Odran's mother's side. | | **Tavari** | Dry-country traders and water-keepers, with a **hospitality principle**: a stranger is offered food and water before being asked why they came. Zahir's tradition. | | **Sivaq** | Far-northern, with deep knowledge of land and season, and a habit of mending and keeping tools that have served for generations. Ayuk's tradition. | | **Maravi** | River-delta and canal communities, with food, markets and festival life. | | **Sorethi** | Scholars, archivists and long-distance traders. *"A thing forgotten is not a thing lost."* | The other four traditions are the **Vashari**, **Ilyan**, **Namaru** and **Hanevi**. ## Money, food and life The currency is the **auruc**, issued by the Civic Treasury. Beyond the city, trade also runs on drafts, line chits, power cells and favours. Staples are **vessa** (a high-yield grain) and **mara root**, and every neighbourhood has a public Civic Kitchen. People live a long time: the median lifespan is about 103, and it tapers toward the frontier. Anka reads late fifties at seventy-four for that reason, and a young-looking face is no guide to a person's age. ## A few phrases you will hear - *"Follow the Glasswater and you'll eventually find Aurevia."* - *"Going up to Crown."* This means going somewhere mysterious. - *"Rail is transportation. A car is an adventure."* - *"A house isn't a home until it has an old light."* - *"It's told."* Don't bother trying to change it.
